a small space

Annual Exhibition at The Art Academy in Malmö
23rd of May 2023
Performed in a supply closet at The Art Academy in Malmö
Performed and created by Konrad Holmqvist, Cecilie Kappel and Per Holmqvist
A 4 hour piece
During four hours we (the performers) sit in a supply closet that we have transformed to our new safe haven. We commit to activities that bring us calm, such as organizing folders on our computers, role-playing and making pasta from scratch. Between these activities we rest by listening to music or watching Netflix. The performance is viewed through the closet door or on our live stream, where one can also experience the digital aspects of our performance. We have created a pause in our lives, because when the process of making art is stressful, then the actual art should be stress free.
As artists, we constantly feel the expectation to sacrifice everything for the arts. It’s an assumption made by the audience, the public, the industry and most prominently: by ourselves. In exploring spaces and activities that make us feel safe and content in the context of an art institution, we create space for reflection about our views on productivity as participants in a society.
